Counterweight of Iparia
The Counterweight of Iparia was an ancient artifact used to power the Helm of Chaos. It’s opposite, The Iparian Key, which powered the Staff of Law, was never removed from that device. The Iparians created them to balance the power on Crucibal during their time. They worshipped the Twin Powers (Laar and Rigidine) and boosted the power of the Staff of Law and the Helm of Chaos which they used to great effect during the Iparian Age.
When the Iparians left this world in a Great Cataclysm caused by the Rogue Gods, The Twin Powers slowly faded from the pantheon. The Rogue Gods were then worshipped by the next ascendant world power of the STP (Sejannese Toral Pugnapax). Their Omniscientists trusted the Phyrexians too much and caused their own demise. Near the end, it was Gurion Goratell who was chosen by the newly revealed Twin Powers to save a remnant of the STP in The Vale where they would be protected by the Staff of Law.
During the Age of Heroes, it was Thanos the Eternal who found the Counterweight of Iparia in the belly of a Leviathan in what is now called Northreach and forged it into the head of Hell’s Hammer. Skylurk Fei stole that weapon from Thanos as revenge after Thanos’ final death and is now the unholy symbol to Skylurk Fei.
In a fit of rage, Skylurk’s deity, Hades, Lord of Death and Wealth, sundered Hell’s Hammer. Since Skylurk’s ascension to godhood, and the coming of The Dark, it was considered lost.
It was only recently retrieved by Malygos Onyxian in 333 of The Dark, the handle being found in Typhon Swamp, and the Counterweight itself in the deeps of the city of Sangria where it was being used to power an Abjuration Field around the city. Malygos and his compatriots stole the artifact and he fused it onto the handle, thus completing the ritual, and Hell’s Hammer was wielded once more in history.
